What Is Asphalt Crack Sealing?

Repairing a crack involves applying an adhesive sealant into the pavement’s crevices. The process takes little time, is low cost, and the surface is able to be opened to traffic almost immediately.

The Hidden Costs of Cracks in Asphalt

While a crack may seem innocuous, a lot of damage can be occurring under the surface. This can include:

Water damage. When water is able to seep below the surface, it can weaken the base or sub-base of the asphalt.
Weakening neighboring pavement. What looks like a localized issue can quickly become a far-spreading problem.
Compressive stresses. Cracks allow sand, stone, and dirt to infiltrate the blacktop, which can lead to permanent damage of the asphalt.
Crack growth. It doesn’t take much for a crack to spiderweb and leave you with several crevices or even a pothole.

Even one of these consequences will lead to a much more in-depth repair process. To prevent any of these from occurring, the best course of action is to hire an expert in asphalt sealing services, like Asphalt Doctors.

Our Process

As an experienced asphalt repair company, our team uses the highest quality material to ensure our seal lasts. Our hot-poured rubberized sealer protects your pavement against moisture, withstands heavy loads, and remains flexible throughout freeze and thaw cycles.

Our asphalt crack sealing process is completed in just three steps:

  1. Surface Preparation
Cracks are first cleaned with forced air to remove loose material. This provides a reasonably clean surface for adhesion. We can also rout cracks and remove vegetation.

  2. Application
After ensuring that the sealant is the precise temperature to achieve optimal results, we use an asphalt squeegee to push the material over the fissure, closely monitoring the placement within the crack. If the surface is not closed to traffic, a 30-mesh sand or hardening agent is applied on top, which strengthens the material.

  3. Cleanup
After the crack has been sealed, we quickly gather up our supplies, clear away any debris, and leave your asphalt looking like new.

FAQs

What time of year should I seal cracks?
While it’s always better to seal a crack sooner than later, the best times to apply a sealant are fall and spring, when weather conditions are more temperate. In summer, the crack will be more closed due to the heat, and in winter, the crack can grow wider

What if my pavement is alligatoring?
“Alligatoring” refers to a series of interconnected cracks, which look like the skin on an alligator’s back. If alligatoring has appeared, this suggests there are deeper problems with the pavement. In the case of severe alligatoring, we can fill the perimeter cracks to help prevent the damage from spreading. (Note: Cracks 1/4″ or larger will be filled.)
